Torque is force times distance, so changing the distance unit from feet to inches multiplies the number by twelve while the physical torque stays identical. 240 in·lbs and 20 ft·lbs are the same tightness — one is just written on a finer scale.
Which unit will your spec be in? As a rule of thumb, anything under about 15 ft·lbs is published in inch-pounds: valve cover bolts, oil pan bolts on small engines, intake manifold fasteners, interior trim, electrical terminals and most plastic-threaded fasteners.
Watch the wrench range. Click wrenches are accurate over roughly the top 80% of their scale. A 1/2-inch-drive 20–150 ft·lbs wrench set to 8 ft·lbs is guesswork; use a 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch-drive inch-pound wrench instead.

100 in·lbs = 8.33 ft·lbs. That is a light spec — typical of valve cover bolts, plastic trim fasteners and small accessory brackets.
Because foot-pound figures below about 15 are hard to set accurately on a common 1/2-inch-drive wrench. Manufacturers publish small fasteners in inch-pounds so a 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch drive wrench can be used at a readable point on its scale.
Only if the spec falls inside the wrench's accurate range — generally the top 80% of its scale. A 20–150 ft·lbs wrench cannot reliably set 8 ft·lbs (100 in·lbs). Use an inch-pound wrench for anything under roughly 15 ft·lbs.
