Important: The values below are general guidelines based on bolt grade and size. Actual torque specifications vary by manufacturer, engine, and model year. Always refer to the factory service manual for your specific vehicle.
| Application | Typical Size | Typical Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wheel lug nuts | M12×1.5 / 1/2"-20 | 80–100 ft·lbs | Varies widely by vehicle |
| Cylinder head bolts | M10–M12 | 30–90 ft·lbs + angle | Often torque-to-yield |
| Connecting rod bolts | M8–M10 | 15–45 ft·lbs + angle | Critical — use factory spec |
| Main bearing cap bolts | M10–M14 | 40–80 ft·lbs | Often multi-step sequence |
| Intake manifold | M6–M8 | 12–22 ft·lbs | Tighten in sequence |
| Exhaust manifold | M8–M10 | 15–30 ft·lbs | Anti-seize recommended |
| Oil drain plug | M12–M14 | 25–35 ft·lbs | Over-tightening cracks pan |
| Spark plugs | M14×1.25 | 12–18 ft·lbs | Cast iron head vs aluminum differs |
| Brake caliper bracket | M12–M14 | 75–110 ft·lbs | Safety critical |
| Brake caliper slide pins | M8–M10 | 25–40 ft·lbs | Apply caliper grease |
| Suspension strut mount | M10–M12 | 30–50 ft·lbs | Inspect for wear |
| Ball joint nut | M14–M16 | 60–100 ft·lbs | Use new cotter pin |
Use a calibrated torque wrench. Hand-feel is unreliable. Even experienced mechanics overestimate their accuracy. A click-type or digital torque wrench eliminates guesswork.
Thread condition matters. Rusty, damaged, or dry threads will absorb torque into friction rather than converting it to clamp load. Clean threads and apply the correct lubricant or thread sealer as specified.
Torque-to-yield (TTY) bolts are single-use. These bolts are tightened to a specific torque then turned an additional angle, permanently stretching the bolt. Cylinder head bolts, connecting rod bolts, and many modern suspension bolts are TTY. Reusing them risks failure.
Tightening sequence matters on multi-bolt patterns (heads, manifolds, valve covers). Always follow the manufacturer's specified pattern, typically starting from the center and working outward in a star or spiral pattern.
